I sent the following email to a few of the Senators seeking a compromise:
I completely appreciate your efforts to find a compromise in the filibuster debate facing the Senate. I would like to suggest a compromise. In order to avoid a showdown on whether or not to change the filibuster rules, I suggest the group of 12 vote to end the filibuster and then vote against Priscilla Owens nomination to the federal court.
In doing so, you would avoid having to vote on changing the rules and would send all Senators and President Bush a message that you will not allow one individual to tear apart the most deliberative body in the world. Our system of government is the greatest this world has seen and the thought that small number of judicial nominations can tear it apart like we are seeing today is deeply saddening. We should be above this!
And then maybe the Senate can get past this and focus on the more pressing issues facing this nation.
